Broadsword Shows its friendly edge!

Lieutenant Commander D. J. Mowlam leads the parade through the streets of Chester on Sunday.

The cheerfull crew of HMS Broadsword brought the streets of Chester to life on Saturday. Their ship was adopted by Chester two years ago. so the weekend they were guests of Chester… and they returned the hospitality in full with a dance in the city on Saturday and an open day onboard ship on the Sunday. All the nice girls love a sailor, and some broken hearts are no doubt suffering this week! Some lucky young ladies from Chester were invited to dance away Saturday evening and the crew were adamant that they are “some of the prettiest girls they have seen.” The Mayors secretary, Wendy Heallis, who herself recieved a “thank-you” bouquet, this week, for all her hard work, said the crew were off to the West Indies next, but confided that they would prefer to be staying in Chester. On Sunday the crew played rugby and soccer against Chester rugby club and Chester Nomads. The following day the City beat a team from HMS Broadsword in a golf match, which Broadsword won the previous year. In the afternoon a “mini Olympics” was held at Chester College of Further Education and the College afterwards took th ecrew out to Tiffany’s nighclub. The Mayor of Chester, councillor Roy Lowe, entertained the shi[ps Captain to dinner on Monday anmd lucky youngsters from Dee Banks Special School and Children from Lache First School visited the ship in Birkenhead.
